Video guide: https://mk8u.de/tutorial – from signing up to the first race.
The MK8 Logger Aroma Plugin is a plugin for the Wii U (Aroma Custom Firmware) that automatically uploads your VR points (VS Race and Battle) to the Mario Kart 8 Logger server after each race.
Requirements
Before installing the plugin, you need:
- A Wii U with Aroma Custom Firmware
- WiiUPluginLoaderBackend and NotificationModule (standard Aroma components)
- An account on the Mario Kart 8 Logger
- A linked Pretendo profile in your account (Pretendo PID)
- An API token (generated via the profile page, required for upload/sync)
Step 1: Link your Pretendo Profile
If you haven't linked a Pretendo profile yet:
- Log in to the Mario Kart 8 Logger
- Go to the Players page
- Search for your player profile (by your Mii name)
- Click the "This is me" button on your profile
- Your Pretendo profile is now linked to your account
You can verify the link on your Profile page, where your Mii name and Player ID will be displayed.
Step 2: Generate an API Token
- Go to your Profile page
- Scroll to the "API Token" section
- Click "Generate API Token"
- Your token will be displayed in full once - copy it or download the token file
Important: Keep your token secure! It works like a password and allows uploading VR points on your behalf.
Step 3: Download the Token File
- On the Profile page in the API Token section, click "Download for Aroma Plugin"
- A file containing your token will be downloaded
- This file will be copied to the SD card in the next step
Step 4: Install the Plugin
4a: Download the Plugin File
- On your Profile page, scroll to the "MK8 Logger Aroma Plugin" section
- Click "mk8logger.wps" to download the plugin file
4b: Copy Files to the SD Card
Copy the downloaded files to the correct locations on your SD card:
Plugin file:
SD Card/wiiu/environments/aroma/plugins/mk8logger.wps
Token file:
SD Card/wiiu/token/

│ └── config/
│ └── mk8logger.cfg ← Configuration (auto-created)

└── memsearch.txt ← Hex search pattern (optional)
Step 5: Restart your Wii U
- Insert the SD card into your Wii U
- Restart the console
- The plugin will be loaded automatically by Aroma
- Start Mario Kart 8 - the plugin activates automatically when Mario Kart 8 is launched
- Play a race - your VR points will now be uploaded automatically!
Opening the Configuration Menu
On the Wii U Menu (not in-game):
L + D-Pad Down + SELECT
→ Aroma Settings → Mario Kart 8 Logger
Configuration Options
The plugin's messages appear in German when your Wii U is set to German (System Settings → Language), otherwise in English (v0.41.00+). The menu itself is English like the whole Aroma menu.
| Option | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Show VR Display | ON | Shows your VR with the change after each online race (e.g. "VR: 8812 (+19)") |
| Show Nintendo Network ID | ON | Shows your account at game start ("User: Mii (NNID)") |
| Upload VR to mk8u.de | ON | Reports race results and your VR to mk8u.de |
| Upload time trial bests to mk8u.de | ON | Sends a new time trial best to mk8u.de right after crossing the finish line (v0.17.00+) |
| Upload race screenshots (ScreenshotWUPS) | ON | Screenshots you take during an online race with the ScreenshotWUPS plugin (its button combo) go to that race on mk8u.de about 30 s after the result (mk8u.de sets how many per race) – visible to signed-in users (v0.22.00+) |
| Upload ghost download rankings to mk8u.de | ON | Automatically sends the ranking the game loads for the ghost download (times around your rank) to mk8u.de (v0.20.00+) |
| Live cheat alarm (impossible items) | ON | When an opponent gets an item the game never hands out on their place (on place 1: Blooper, Spiny Shell, Super Star, Bullet Bill, Lightning, Golden Mushroom), a red notice with their name stays until the race ends and the plugin saves a TV picture that goes to the race (v0.25.00+) |
| Check for plugin updates | ON | Once per game start (about 30 s in) the plugin asks mk8u.de for a newer version (v0.28.00+) |
| Install updates automatically | ON | Downloads the newer version over a verified connection, checks it and replaces your mk8logger.wps - active after the next console restart. Switched off, you only get a notice. Keep the file name containing mk8logger (v0.28.00+) |
| Import all time trial bests now | (action) | Switching it on sends the saved bests of all courses to mk8u.de once; times already known are skipped. Only in-game, once the main menu has loaded (v0.19.00+) |
| Share game files with mk8u.de (home network) | (action) | Hands the running game's files to your browser in your home network, so mk8u.de's 3D view can build the original graphics, karts and music from your own game. The address and code to enter on mk8u.de stay on screen as a notice until mk8u.de has connected (3D view → "Your game"). With the same address and code the GamePad becomes the controller for driving on mk8u.de, steering by tilting; MK8 ignores it meanwhile (v0.42.00+). Only while MK8 runs – open the menu in the game for it; ends when switched off or when the game ends. Guide: Connect your game (v0.40.00+) |
| Sync VR from other consoles | OFF | At game start (~15 s), takes over the VR last uploaded from another console |
| Token | (info) | Path to the API token file |
| Device Hash | (info) | Identifier of this console (for support) |
Upload and sync require an API token:
SD:/wiiu/token/{Principal_ID}_api_token.txt
Download the token file with the correct name (10-digit Principal ID) on your Profile page.
Debug
Only visible when the admin enables "Aroma Debug" for your account (for support):
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Memory Search | Searches memory for the byte pattern from SD:/wiiu/memsearch.txt and writes its surroundings to the log |
| Reset Device Hash | Resets the stored console identifier (fix for HTTP 400), then restart MK8 |
What Does the Plugin Do?
After installation, the plugin works fully automatically in the background:
- Race results: After every online race, placements, points and VR of all players are reported to mk8u.de
- Automatic upload: Your VR points are sent to the server after every race
- VS Race & Battle: Both game modes are supported
- Region & Country: The plugin automatically sends your region and country code
- Console synchronization: VR points can be synchronized between multiple Wii U consoles
You can view your VR points on your Profile page in the "VR Points" section. A chart showing your VR history over time is also displayed there.
Synchronizing Multiple Consoles
If you use the plugin on multiple Wii U consoles, VR points are synchronized via the console serial number:
- Install the plugin on both consoles (each with the same API token)
- Each console automatically sends its serial number with every upload
- When fetching VR points, each console detects whether the latest points came from a different console
- If so, the local points are automatically updated
Note: You use the same API token on all consoles, as it is tied to your account.
Troubleshooting
Quick Reference
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| VR not displayed | Enable Show VR Display in the config menu; the VR appears after each online race |
| Upload fails (HTTP 400) | Ask support: with "Aroma Debug", Reset Device Hash appears |
| Upload fails (no token) | Create token file with correct filename (PID) |
| Sync not working | Upload must also be enabled |
Plugin is Not Loading
- Make sure
mk8logger.wpsis in the correct folder:/wiiu/environments/aroma/plugins/ - Verify that Aroma, WiiUPluginLoaderBackend, and NotificationModule are correctly installed
- Restart the Wii U
VR Points Are Not Being Uploaded
- Check that the token file is in the
/wiiu/token/folder and has the correct filename ({PID}_api_token.txt) - Make sure Upload VR to mk8u.de is enabled in the configuration menu
- Make sure your API token is active (check on the Profile page)
- Verify your Wii U's internet connection
- If the token was revoked: Generate a new token and download the new token file
- For HTTP 400: Ask support – with "Aroma Debug" you can reset the console identifier with Reset Device Hash
Token is Expired or Invalid
- Go to your Profile page
- Click "Regenerate Token" in the API Token section
- Download the new token file ("Download for Aroma Plugin")
- Replace the old token file on the SD card with the new one
No Pretendo Profile Linked
The plugin requires a linked Pretendo profile to associate your VR points with the correct player. Follow Step 1 above.
Managing Your Token
On your Profile page, you can manage your API token:
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Generate API Token | Creates a new token (only visible if none exists yet) |
| Download for Aroma Plugin | Downloads the token file for the SD card |
| Reveal Full Token | Displays the full token (once, reload page to hide) |
| Regenerate Token | Creates a new token and invalidates the old one |
| Revoke Token | Deletes the token completely |
Warning: If you regenerate or revoke a token, you must copy the new token file to the SD card again!
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to manually activate the plugin after each race? No, the plugin works fully automatically in the background.
Can I use the token for other tools? Yes, the API token can also be used for custom scripts or tools that upload VR points via the HTTP API. Details can be found in the "How to use" section on the Profile page.
Are only my own VR points uploaded? For single uploads (automatically by the plugin), only your own points are uploaded. Via the batch upload, VR points for other players in the same race can also be recorded.
What happens if my Wii U is offline? VR points are only uploaded when an internet connection is available. Failed uploads are lost and will not be retried.
